I am really new to this! I have this "friend" that has been chatting with me through instant messenger in AOL. He does this at work. He told me the other day, that his company has installed "firewalls" and now he can no longer access IM or any other type of instant messenger. But "sometimes" he can get through and e-mail me. Not knowing much about firewalls, is this possible?

Thanks,

Pam

Yes. Firewalls can be set to block certain ports or unathorized traffic or filter e-mail. Also, most companies monitor everything, so nothing should ever be presumed to be private.

im only 15, but i can help
firewalls are programs that are setup to monitor in coming and outgoing tcp/ip packets (information sent to and from the internet to and from your computer), coming from any program
Each computer that is connected to the internet is connected through 65535 different ports
Each of these ports are used by programs but some are set to be used by only one program, so port 23 is used by "telnet", and other ports by other programs
At any given time thousands of your ports are open, and therefore a potential hacker would be able to dial a connection into your computer.
A firewall conceals all these ports so they cannot be seen. This means that a hacker would not be able to see these ports and enter your computer, an advantage.
The problem with this is that it monitors ALL traffic, which means anything you send can be seen, and logged....
To answer pams question on the "sometimes he can get through", this may be possible if the firewall is set to operate only on certain computers, or at certain times, however it is unlikely this is so, as most companies will go for complete security and monitoring of their employees.
However, it is possible to circumvent a firewall, if anyone wants me to detail these methods plz say
and good luck with the person who is starting on the projecy...hope it goes well

my mistake sorry pam...
on AIM firewalls may block this , but i doubt they block email headers so email should always be able to get through but is likely to be monitored. So if there is anything in your "friend's" e-mail that is personal or that he doesn't want ne one else to see then he is right...
hows the project going jyothi?

Cassie , regarding your problem
wot i expect is that your ISP (internet service provider), whoever you connect to the internet with is running the firewall...
however, i would check with anyone else that uses the computer that they havent set up a firewall (ie, partner, roommate, etc)
If not, then fone up you ISP (as mentioned above), and ask about this, if they are then there is little you can do ....
u could go to anonymizer.com and type in the adress of the interactive application (ie... http://www."name of the site".com)...that might work...
reply with wot u need other than this, if ne more instructions, im quite happy to abide and help step by step...

I have networked 2 computers at home and have them running fine, also sharing the internet connection, which is fine until I try to send file thru a messenger program. This is when my firewall is working, or the time that I know it's working. I have tried all the settings in my chat program and none of them work. The internet sharer I'm using is All-Aboard/InternetShare, the program itself was MOS.EXE if any of this helps. My question is, how do I disable this firewall? I only have the problem when both computers are connected to the net, but I am not the host computer. I use a dial-up connection, 56k, networked thru a HUB and the messenger program that I have tried to send thru is Yahoo Messenger. THANKS A BUNCH!!!!

Please give me a step-by-step procedure on circumventing firewalls, one which "non-techies" like me could understand and apply. My friend can't access certain sites because of a firewall, which naturally limits his use of the Internet. Thank you very much.

PS - his ISP may be responsible for putting up the firewall.

augustin, if you mean you would like to write a site dedicated to a particular firewall, look around some of those on the web to find out what they've done. Study the program, and try to take it to pieces, and see how it "ticks"; then ask your questions of the producers.

To see something of what I mean, look at my site at:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/susan.todd3/index.htm

echt, can you help us? Which firewall are you running that has port 80 open?
